Where’s The Best Place To Fit A Radiator?

Tips To Remember When Placing Your Radiator

  • Placing Thick Curtains On Your Window To Prevent Cold Air. Block cold air from entering your home with thick curtains on your window. Choose from heavyweight textiles like velvet, tweed or suede to protect your room from the coldness.
  • Positioning Your Radiator Opposite A Window Or Wall. Placing your radiator opposite your window allows your room to effectively warm up with natural convection. The cold air entering through your window will meet the bottom of your radiator and pass over, helping the cold air to transfer into hot air making your room less dense as hot air rises. Or, place a radiator on an opposite wall that doesn’t have a window. If you have purchased a radiator with the correct size for your room's heat output (calculated with our trusty BTU Calculator!), the type and size of your window should be factored in when your room is being effectively heated up.
  • Installing A Vertical Radiator Onto Walls. If you’re short on room, maximise your floor-to-wall space by placing a slimline vertical radiator onto your walls. These types of radiators are ideal for kitchens furnished with large kitchen units. Plus, vertical radiators are able to emit just as much heat as horizontal column radiators while giving a sleek and symmetrical look.
  • Consider Positioning Your Radiator Around Existing Pipework. Oftentimes, in older properties, you’ll find pipework underneath windows as this is where it had to be placed. By installing a radiator where there is existing pipework, you’ll find it’s usually a lot easier and less costly.
  • Or Rework Your Pipework. If your existing pipework isn’t serving the new look of your room, switch up its location with the help of a plumber. Rather than perceiving your pipework as a challenge, get creative and think outside the box when it comes to placing your radiator - the possibilities are endless!
  • Keep Away From Placing Your Radiator Behind Furniture. It’s recommended not to place your radiator behind furniture like sofas which can often absorb heat and prevent it from circulating around the room. Ultimately, this makes heat distribution less efficient.
  • Avoid Full-Length Curtains. It’s best to stay away from placing your radiator around full-length curtains as they can significantly restrict heat distribution around your room. Full-length curtains can be dangerous for radiators as they emit heat from the top and this can lead to potential fire risks.
