How does a radiator thermostat work?

How does a radiator thermostat work?

When it comes to having control over your heating, you can stick to the manual valves on your radiator but why would you when there are other, more convenient options? Staying toasty has never been easier with these easy solutions to keeping warm. There are two different ways you can control the temperature of your radiators which we’ll go over in this blog post. One way is to install thermostatic radiator valves (also known as TRVs) and the other is to use a smart thermostat that can control the radiators individually. What are they and how do they work? Read on to find out.

Thermostatic radiator valves

Thermostatic radiator valves have unique mechanisms inside, sometimes using liquid or wax, that shut off the flow of hot water to a specific individual radiator when the room temperature is at its desired level. Installing thermostatic radiator valves is like having a boiler thermostat control in every room, and while they don’t interact with the boiler directly, they heat up your radiators quicker by shutting off the water supply to their radiator earlier. This means your boiler switches off quicker, saving you money, reducing your carbon footprint and reaching your desired comfort level - all in one go. Talus Flair - White Thermostatic Radiator Valve Angled In addition to all of that, good thermostatic radiator valves, such as the ones we sell here at UK Radiators, will have a frost prevention mode, which detects when the temperature of the room drops below a certain level and reopens the valve slightly to let a little hot water back into the radiator. This prevents your radiator and pipes from freezing, preventing them from becoming damaged and potentially bursting. It’s important to note that TRVs shouldn’t be installed in bathrooms, due to frequent temperature changes, or rooms where the boiler thermostat is located. Smart radiator valves

If you thought that thermostatic valves were the best you can get when it comes to heating technology, think again. Smart radiator valves give you complete, flexible control over your heating. Forget simply just setting a temperature and walking away, these radiator fittings know when you want them to turn on and off. When you replace the heads of thermostatic radiator valves with a smart valve, it can not only control the temperature of the room, but learn just how you like it too. Using motion sensors to detect people in the space, it will learn the times of day that you need the room to be warm and consequently, turn the valve on and off based on what it has learned about you. The temperature that you want the room at is still set by you though. There’s some serious energy saving potential there as the radiator will only be on during the times you need it to be, without you having to think about it. You’ll need a full set of heating controls in order to have the ultimate control. This includes a smart thermostat panel as well as a set of smart radiator thermostats.
