How do you know what size radiator you need?
What kind of radiator is necessary to heat your room is not dependent on the size, but on it’s heat output, measured in BTU (British Thermal Unit). A BTU is defined as the amount of energy necessary to heat up a pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Often, larger radiators do have larger heat outputs with higher BTUs, but not always. When choosing a radiator you need to match the heating requirements of your room, with the BTU of your chosen radiator. A plumber or electrician can work out the exact BTU for your room, but in most cases, an estimate is suitable.
What affects the BTU requirements?
There are two factors that affect the BTU. Firstly, the temperature you wish to keep the room at. Secondly, the rate of heat loss from the room. One of the biggest factors that will affect this is the size of the room, but other features are important, such as what is above and below the room, what type of windows your bathroom has, the kind of walls and whether they are outside or inside walls. All of these features give guidance on what sort of heat loss the room will experience and what BTU will be required to maintain the desired temperature.
