BTU Calculator and Picking the Right Size Radiator/Towel Rail

BTU Calculator and Picking the Right Size Radiator/Towel Rail

Deciding on Room Temperatures

The first thing to take into account before considering radiator types is that of exactly what temperature you would like each room of the home to be kept at. For obvious reasons, the bathroom is usually kept slightly warmer than the rest of the home while the entrance hall and kitchen may be kept slightly cooler. This should be factored into the rest of the decision-making process as you of course will not need huge and powerful radiators in rooms you’d prefer to keep cool.

Escaping Heat

It isn’t necessary to get too carried away with complex calculations, but you might still want to take into account the likelihood of heat escaping from any given room. For example, if the room in question is connected to an external door that is opened frequently, you might want to consider a slightly larger or more powerful radiator than would otherwise be needed. The same also goes for any areas of the home that are known to be particularly draughty.

Use a BTU Calculator

The good news is that when it comes to working out the size of the radiator required for any of the rooms of your home, there’s a free and simple calculator available to help. UK Radiators' BTU calculator can be found here: BTU Calculator Simply by entering the dimensions of the room, the extent to which it is insulated and exactly how much you would like the temperature to be increased, you’ll be provided with an instant answer as to the size of the radiator required to do the job. As a general rule of thumb, it is advisable to select the radiator size that’s slightly above the size the BTU calculator recommends, in order to provide greater flexibility. In addition, if the room to be heated is larger than 18-feet (6-meters) in any direction, it is recommended that at least two radiators be purchased and installed to help distribute the heat more evenly. And of course, exactly where the radiators will be positioned in the room is a matter of pivotal importance – speak to the professionals for a little advice if unsure.
