4 Ways To Keep Conservatories Warm During The Winter

4 Ways To Keep Conservatories Warm During The Winter

Partition Type

The main issue with a conservatory that has any type of heating, is that the room itself is a drain on the rest of the house. So, is your conservatory open planned or does it have a partition/doors separating it? If it is partitioned, then ensuring that the partition is draft proofed and of reasonable quality will allow you to turn off the heating in the conservatory without impacting the rest of the house. This will allow you to only heat the conservatory when you need it. If you have an open-plan conservatory, then you probably have to heat it along with the rest of your rooms to maintain an ambient temperature across your home.

Upgrade Your Glazing And Roof Type

Over the years, there have been lots of improvements to triple-glazed windows with them now containing different types of gas between the panes, including argon, xenon and krypton.  When looking to upgrade your glazing, we recommend looking out for these types of gases to effectively retain heat and insulate rooms like conservatories.  Another way to retain heat in your conservatory is by replacing your roof with more modern materials such as insulated glass and tiles too. If you’re looking to renovate or extend your home into a conservatory, we recommend having a budget in mind as installing double glazing can be costly - but worthwhile when you can enjoy the cosier environment!

Solar Gains

The drawback of a building made mostly from glass is that it loses heat at a high rate compared to solid walls. Despite this, you can still reap the rewards and take advantage of solar gains during the day. This is because the heat is still generated from the sun through the glass. Just make sure that curtains and blinds are open during the day and you will most likely see a significant benefit.

Draught-Proofing

One of the most inexpensive ways to effectively save energy and money in conservatories is by draught-proofing. They ensure that controlled ventilation blocks unwanted gaps that let out warm air, allowing your conservatory to keep warm and use less energy in the long run.  Depending on how much of a budget you have, you can call a professional to draught-proof your room, or you can DIY draught-proof yourself!  Here are some items you can use to draught-proof your conservatory:
  • Compression Seals
  • Window film
  • Self-adhesive foam strips
  • Hinged flap draught excludes
